How Seeking Alpha and Tradune compute the numbers

Method by method, checked October 16, 2026
Question Tradune Seeking Alpha
How is your return measured? Money-weighted return (XIRR) on every deposit, buy, sell and dividend you record, plus a time-weighted (TWR) base-100 curve. Under a year of history it shows a cumulative figure and does not annualise. Portfolios show holdings and a Portfolio Health Score (the aggregate Quant Rating of your stocks); a money- or time-weighted return method is not described in its feature list.
How are trades recorded? Each buy, sell, deposit, withdrawal and split you enter is kept with its own date and price; P&L and returns are computed from those rows. Linked portfolios update from your broker once a day; manual portfolios hold the positions you enter. Transaction-level history is not described in the help pages we read.
Cost basis and US tax lots FIFO, LIFO or average cost, set per portfolio. The realized-gains report splits short- from long-term and flags a loss sale with a same-symbol buy within 30 days as a possible wash sale. No specific-lot selection. Not listed in its Premium feature list.
Getting your holdings in Manual entry, or a positions CSV of up to 200 rows (Fidelity, Schwab and Robinhood exports are recognised). No broker connection and no automatic sync — new trades are entered by hand. Broker linking on Premium and PRO (US brokers, daily updates, values in USD; MFA accounts need a one-time code to refresh), or manual entry.
What is the benchmark? A SPY twin: your own cash flows replayed into SPY on the same dates, on a total-return series with dividends reinvested. The time-weighted curve plots SPY and QQQ. No portfolio-vs-benchmark method described in its Premium feature list.

What does Seeking Alpha Premium include?

Its help center lists Quant Ratings next to SA Authors and Wall Street ratings, factor grades for value, growth, profitability, momentum and EPS revisions, stock and ETF screeners built on those grades, curated top-stock lists, price and rating alerts, unlimited earnings-call transcripts, broker-linked portfolios and a Portfolio Health Score. Premium lists at $299 a year.

For reading opinions and ratings before a decision, that library is far larger than anything Tradune has.

Is a Quant Rating the same as Tradune’s Stock Grade?

They answer a similar question with different openness. Seeking Alpha’s Quant Rating and factor grades are its own system. The Tradune Grade is a sector-relative 0–100 score across quality, value, momentum and growth with its full methodology published, so you can see why a stock scores what it does.

Neither is a recommendation. Tradune’s centre of gravity is elsewhere anyway: your money-weighted return against a SPY twin funded on your own dates, portfolio VaR and drawdown, and SEC Form 4 insider activity on what you hold.
