Tradune vs Portfolio Visualizer
Portfolio Visualizer answers “what would this allocation have done?”; Tradune answers “what did my actual trades do?”. Both report money-weighted and time-weighted returns — they apply them to different portfolios.

Where Portfolio Visualizer is strong
- Excellent portfolio backtesting and asset-allocation models
- Strong factor regression and Monte-Carlo tools
- Mean-variance / efficient-frontier optimization
Where Tradune goes further
Portfolio Visualizer is allocation-level research; Tradune brings the same backtesting, factor X-ray and efficient-frontier optimization onto a live holdings tracker, then adds a screener, alerts, SEC insider/13F signals and tax-loss harvesting. All free right now.
Specifically, versus Portfolio Visualizer, the gaps it closes are:
- Allocation-level, not a live holdings tracker with P&L
- No stock screener (its screener covers funds), price alerts or insider/analyst signals
- The free tier backtests up to 15 assets with limited history and no month-to-date results
- No tax-loss-harvesting workflow
How Portfolio Visualizer and Tradune compute the numbers
| Question | Tradune | Portfolio Visualizer |
|---|---|---|
| How is your return measured? | Money-weighted return (XIRR) on every deposit, buy, sell and dividend you record, plus a time-weighted (TWR) base-100 curve. Under a year of history it shows a cumulative figure and does not annualise. | Backtests report CAGR, and its notes define TWRR and MWRR (the IRR with cashflows); its FAQ says IRR is shown for portfolios with periodic contributions or withdrawals. |
| How are trades recorded? | Each buy, sell, deposit, withdrawal and split you enter is kept with its own date and price; P&L and returns are computed from those rows. | Not a trade record: you enter tickers and weights, and cashflows are modelled as fixed periodic contributions or withdrawals (monthly, quarterly or annually). |
| Cost basis and US tax lots | FIFO, LIFO or average cost, set per portfolio. The realized-gains report splits short- from long-term and flags a loss sale with a same-symbol buy within 30 days as a possible wash sale. No specific-lot selection. | Not applicable to model portfolios; no cost-basis or tax report listed. |
| Getting your holdings in | Manual entry, or a positions CSV of up to 200 rows (Fidelity, Schwab and Robinhood exports are recognised). No broker connection and no automatic sync — new trades are entered by hand. | Type in or import a portfolio model; Basic saves 50 models and Pro 150. |
| What is the benchmark? | A SPY twin: your own cash flows replayed into SPY on the same dates, on a total-return series with dividends reinvested. The time-weighted curve plots SPY and QQQ. | S&P 500 TR, the US Aggregate bond index, or any ticker you specify, with active return, tracking error and information ratio. |

What does Portfolio Visualizer do that Tradune does not?
Allocation research at a depth Tradune does not attempt. Its tools include asset-class and portfolio backtests with rebalancing bands, Monte Carlo and financial-goal simulation, efficient-frontier, Black-Litterman and rolling optimisation, factor regression and factor performance attribution, and tactical allocation models. A single backtest reports, among other things, historical, analytical and conditional value-at-risk, capture ratios and safe and perpetual withdrawal rates.
If you are designing an allocation — choosing weights before you invest — it is the stronger tool.
Why does it matter that Tradune uses your real trades?
A backtest assumes a fixed mix and tidy periodic contributions. Real portfolios add money irregularly, buy after rallies and sell after drops, and that timing changes the result. Portfolio Visualizer’s own notes say CAGR is affected by cashflows while TWRR is not — exactly why the timing matters.
Tradune applies money-weighted and time-weighted returns to the trades you actually made: each deposit, buy, sell and dividend, with a SPY twin funded on the same dates. It also runs a backtest, a Fama-French factor X-ray and an efficient-frontier optimiser on your current holdings — narrower than Portfolio Visualizer’s toolkit, but on the real portfolio.
Frequently asked
Is Tradune a good Portfolio Visualizer alternative?
Tradune brings backtesting, factor X-ray, Monte-Carlo goal simulation and efficient-frontier optimization together with a live portfolio tracker, screener, alerts and signals. Portfolio Visualizer remains superb for pure allocation-level quantitative research.
Does Tradune do factor analysis and efficient-frontier optimization?
Yes — a Fama-French Factor X-Ray on your holdings and an optimizer that plots the efficient frontier with your portfolio on it.
